Two Approaches
Lets look at two
approaches you might take to investing a $5,000 marketing budget.
We
recently acquired a new client who we’ll call Rodger. He explained to us that
his marketing efforts simply weren’t paying off and he was ready to make some
changes. He wanted to increase his active client base so he could spread
his income across a larger number of clients, but he wasn’t sure what marketing
changes he need to make to produce the desired
results. Although his marketing had remained consistent, his phone had
been ringing less over the past 6 months. He
spent his last marketing budget 6 months ago in a direct mail campaign, where
he mailed color tri-fold brochures to his database of 1,000 attorneys within a
commutable distance from his office. His plan was to then follow up the brochures with a personal phone call two
weeks later. However Rodger
was only able to make 150 calls simply due to lack of time. (but hold on we have
phoneblocking also…) The total cost for the campaign, including
all expenses (design, printing, envelope stuffing labor, postage) totaled
around $5,000.[1]
Typically, a mailing like this will yield you one
interested party per 100 pieces mailed or a 1% rate of return, if you add a
follow up phone call you might be able to increase that number to 3% and if
you’re real good on the phone, you might convert 1 or 2 of those calls to
paying clients. This is a good example of what we like to call “marketing
blindly”.
So how did Roger
do? His 1,000 brochures had an average rate of return of 1%, yielding 9
interested parties. Of the 9 parties, he was able to convert 2 into paying
cases yielding $3,300 in income. Remember the 150 follow up calls? They did
help in the scheme of things. By following up his tri-fold mailer, the phone
calls led to 4 lawyers who were interested in his services where he was able to
book 1 more case.
With a total of three cases at roughly 6-hours per
case and $275 per hour, he missed his break-even by $50.00 bringing in $4,950
in gross income. Adding these new cases to his normal caseload could very well
raise his future income, but he felt it was a lot of effort for the return, and
we agreed.
Hmm I never
got a call from those ones.. NEVER
I don’t want
it either.
